Micro Needling Scar Treatments The Dermapen is a convenient and effective way of performing needle dermabrasion.

The Dermapen adjustable needles penetrate a controlled depth into the dermis. The dermis develops multiple microbruises, which start a cascade of growth factor release and collagen production. Punch biopsy histology demonstrates thickening of the skin with dramatic increases in new collagen and elastin fibers.

As collagen is deposited, the skin texture improves. Results are initially seen in six weeks and full effect will take three months to develop. Severity grade of rolling scars has been shown to be statistically reduced in a clinically meaningful fashion after two sessions of needle dermabrasion.

What to Expect From Micro Needling

Prospective clients often call us to ask if we can help reduce the appearance of a scar.  The answer is a definite “yes”, we can help. But there’s a lot more to it than that.  It’s important to understand what can and can’t be done, and to have the proper expectations from the beginning. Here’s what you should know about scar camouflaging and scar relaxation.

Micro Needling also known as Scar relaxation is accomplished using a technique called micro needling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). Micro needling creates microscopic punctures in the scar tissue. This stimulates collagen production and helps blood capillaries reach the surface.  The result is improved skin tone (color), smoothed texture and a reduction of the three-dimensional appearance of the scar.

What to expect:

Although micro needling and scar camouflage can reduce the appearance of your scar, it’s important to understand that scars are long-lasting and no scar will ever be completely invisible.  Every scar is different: body location, size, shape, color, appearance of depth, and so on. Some scars require only a single treatment, others take multiple treatments. Results are cumulative and may take four to six weeks to fully develop.

If you’ve had your scar for a while, you may have noticed that it doesn’t tan the same way the rest of your skin does.  That’s a natural characteristic of scar tissue, and is not something we can change. However, the scar should be less visible as a result of our procedures.

When do you see results after micro needling treatment?

You should see improved skin texture within a week. For acne scars, you will need several treatments and final outcomes will start appearing at 3 months and will be ongoing beyond 180 days, long the time frame for collagen remodelling.

Most patients in our practice see results after even one treatment or 4 weeks later.  Results continue to improve after each treatment.  For results to be noticeable, the procedure needs to be done aggressively.  Many patients come to our office feeling discourage because they had the procedure done elsewhere and the clinician did not do it properly. Also, plasma should always be infused during the procedure to enhance healing as well as the production of new collagen
